Life has a funny way of being very similar for all kinds of people. No matter where you live or who you are, there are certain life experiences that you share with the rest of humanity: the feeling of a family around you, the changes in your body and mind as you get older, the sensation of falling in love for the first time. Similarly, there are some lessons that everyone learns… and sometimes these lessons really can only be learned the hard way.
Life Moves Pretty Fast
It’s like Ferris Bueller once said: “life moves pretty fast.” This starts to become more and more apparent as you get older, but sometimes the speed at which life changes just doesn’t hit you until something forces you to become aware of it. You’ll be sitting there one day and then realize that your entire life has changed in the blink of an eye. In that moment, you’ll know that time is precious and that things move fast. It’s a valuable lesson to learn, but it’s not always fun at the moment. Once you know it, though, you’ll take more time to appreciate the finer things.
People change
When we’re young, we like to think that we are going to be the same people for the rest of our lives. But through school, jobs, and relationships, we all slowly change. You may think that you’re the same person as always, but everyone has things about themselves that change. Similarly, you can learn the hard way that people don’t always stay the same. We’ve all had that one friend that just showed up one day and seemed like a different person. It’s painful when it happens, but it really makes you realize that you can’t always trust people to be the same no matter what. It’s just not realistic.

Rules Are Meant to Be Broken
Well, some of them. We aren’t here to advocate for you to go out and cheat on your test or steal from a store, but it’s certainly a fact that some rules are meant to be broken. As you grow up, you’ll start off thinking that you need to follow every rule and regulation that exists. But when you see others carefully break rules and push past limits and succeed because of it, you might start to realize that you don’t always need to adhere to the rules that are in place. It can be tough to get there, but it’s somewhat liberating when you come to the realization that some rules just aren’t absolute.
Love is fleeting
There is nothing more exciting than falling in love for the first time. It’s a truly transformative experience that will change you from a child into an adult. But it’s also heartbreaking. Very few people’s first loves end up being their only loves, and that means that there is some pain along the way when that love fades or breaks apart. Learning that love is fleeting is one of the hardest earned lessons in life, and almost everyone feels the same pain and then learns from it at some point in their lives. Eventually, you will find the one, but there will always be some bumps along the way.

Hard Work Is Necessary
This lesson is an interesting one. Some people are taught from a very early age that they should always work as hard as possible. Others don’t learn it until much later in life. But there is usually some point where reality shows you that you really need to work hard to get what you want. For most people, this lesson is learned in college. Once you get there, the demands of academia and your newfound independence mix, and it’s a shock when you realize just how hard you have to work to just get by. If you aren’t there yet, enjoy those simple days while you can!
